Hank was exhausted after finishing the two postmortems with Mima and Kyla. He sent Milton an intership communication and went to the command center, playing with the idea of getting a couple minutes of sleep.

He found Russ bent over the consoles, typing frantically.

“What’s up?” he asked, almost not wanting to know. He looked longingly down at his single bed. The pillow appeared fluffy, perfect to cradle his aching head. Things had gone so wrong, he almost regretted his decision to film here.

“Milton has shut down the outside communications link so we can’t stream the singers we have lined up.”

“We knew things might be dicey on that front. That’s why we brought the backup.” He fumbled around in a box that should have aspirin in it. Somewhere. Please God let there be something to help his aching head.

“Yeah, but I’m starting to wonder what he’s up to. I’m locked out of a bunch of areas I had access to before.”

Digging to the bottom of the box, Hank’s fingers hit a bottle that rattled promisingly. He hauled it up and popped off the top and took two dry. A bitter taste filled his mouth. “You’d better leave it alone. I’m starting to think this place can’t handle the slightest pressure without falling apart.”

“I think you’re right,” Russ agreed, still typing.

“The hot tub is cold,” Lynette announced at the doorway. “I’ve turned it on, but it will take hours to heat back up. Dammit. Now what am I supposed to do with them?” She dropped onto his bed.

Hank was tempted to join her, but instead located a couple bottles of water and tapped her on the shoulder with one.

She glanced up and he handed her the water. “Thanks,” she said, her voice so filled with gratitude, he leaned down to hug her.

He stopped just in time. He wasn’t going to make the pressure between them worse than it already was. That would solve nothing.

Or would it?

Jackson, the maintenance man, took the moment of indecision away from him by striding into the room. “Who turned on the hot tub?” he growled in his melodious voice, managing somehow to sound pissed and sexy at the same time.

“I did.” Lynette stood, her old take-no-shit persona clicking into place.

Hank found he liked that she wasn’t melting in the face of the handsome maintenance man. The annoyance he’d felt when the man walked in receded a bit.

“No one can turn that on. We don’t have the power to run it.”

“How did you even know I’d done it?”

“The power drain set off an alarm I set up.”

“Are you that worried about the power?” Hank didn’t find this news reassuring. Milton promised that everything would be okay, but he was starting to see that Milton’s promises weren’t worth the paper they were printed on.

“Of course I’m worried. We’re limping here. You should speed up your filming.” Then he turned and left without another word, leaving them all in a shocked silence.

“If they’re admitting it, it’s bad,” Russ pointed out.

He was right.
